The Gavin Chronicles, December 16, 2007

I was there to hear your borning cry......I'll be there when you are old....

Good Morning!

Hope this email finds you well and enjoying your weekend. I am sure many of you are in the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping and all of the joy of the season. This is such a fun time of year for everyone young and old. We too are caught up in the joy of the season.

As for Gavin, we have quite an update for today....

Last week Gavin graduated to an open air "big boy" crib. We were so excited with this progress. He is growing up and getting bigger each and every day. Last week also brought the news that Gavin would be having his final surgery to reverse the illeostomy on Monday December 17. The surgery will be done at Littleton Hospital so we do not have to transfer back to PSL. It is scheduled for 8:30 in the morning. He is back on a bit of oxygen and by a bit I really do mean a scant amount. They want him to put all of his energy into growing right now before surgery so they help him out in all areas to achieve that. He is starting to nipple his feedings much better because his suck, swallow, breath coordination is finally beginning to click for him. Last night he was able to nipple almost 2 oz by bottle. We were so proud of him. He weighed in last night at 4lb 15oz. Hard to believe he is 4x his birth weight.

So, for today we are rejoicing in the news of Gavins surgery tomorrow. We are excited for this big step but scared as well. We have anticipated this day for many months and it is finally here. Recovery should take about a week give or take a few.....so they say. He will be back on a ventilator for a period of time for surgery and post op....possibly a couple of days. They will begin feeding him about 7 days post surgery unless the surgeon orders it sooner. Until then, Gavin will receive IV nutrition. Once Gavin is done with recovery he needs to work on mastering nippling all of his feedings and then he will come home. Dare I say we expect this to happen by about the first week in January or so.....

Please continue to keep us in your prayers. Pray for Gavin and the surgeons tomorrow. Pray that the Lord would guide their hands and keep a watchful eye on Gavin as well. Pray for strength and a speedy recovery. Pray for Colin and I for patience to make it through surgery and recovery. Keep Ian and Brooke in your prayers for patience to make it another 9 days.....on toy restriction.

Thank you again for all of your prayers and continued support. We never could have made it this far without all of the love and support we have received from the many family, friends and even complete strangers. God is truly good and he has provided us with wonderful people in our lives......

We will update you tomorrow once surgery is over....until then, enjoy a few new pictures.
